About the Cemetery

Woodland Cemetery was first established in 1874. The cemetery is not marked on the 1874 Atlas, however the land is shown to be owned by B. F. Jones. Many of the neighboring family names from the 1874 census can be found in this cemetery, such as Cole, Jones, Kentch, McKinley, Pedigo, and Rule.

According to a previous index of the cemetery in the 1970s, the land was deeded to the Woodland Cemetery Improvement Association on 9 Sep 1908 by Samuel L Winston. The cemetery is marked on the 1902 Atlas on land owned by S L Wilson (s/b Winston). The Crandall and Rule families are close neighbors. In 1922 Atlas we find the land surrounding the cemetery is owned by J H Winston. The cemetery is frequently referred to as Winston cemetery in death notices during Winston's time. Samuel L Winston died 3 Feb 1916 and was interred in nearby Bryant cemetery in Cass County, MO.

An article in the Olathe Mirror, on 7 Mar 1918, page 8, mentions a pie supper that raised $41 to be used for cement gate posts, new gates, and other improvements to the Woodland cemetery. While no fence or gates exist today, the cement posts still mark the original entrance to the cemetery.

This cemetery has suffered a great deal of damage, and is known to have suffered vandalism. There are many broken and obviously missing stones. It is known through stories of those in the area that there are other unmarked burials in the cemetery. Due to the number of unidentified burials, it is difficult to evaluate the activity in the cemetery.

From the Olathe Mirror we learn that the entire William X. Pedigo family, with the exception of William, suffered from a measles outbreak in 1900 and 3 of his daughters perished. Ada May, age 16, died 22 Feb 1900; Abbie Gertrude (Gertie), age 10, died 2 March 1900; Mary Samantha, age 23, died 12 March 1900. William's Aunt Calphurey (Callie) passed away suddenly in 1906. According to local resident Clayton Richardson, Charles E and William H Pedigo (son and grandson of William X) were killed by a train in Spring Hill, KS, on 24 Jul 1936.

This cemetery is owned and maintained by the Aubry Cemetery District, Aubry Twp, Johnson Co, KS and no history is available. No lots are currently being sold.

Photographed and transcribed by Linda K. Lewis, 30 Jul 2005. This is a complete transcription by reading and photographing the gravestones, and was rephotographed in 2008. Additional information was provided by the sexton's map which filled in a few illegible stones and missing markers. Further information was provided from an index compiled in the 1970s and found in the Johnson County Cemetery Index, published by the Johnson County Genealogical Society.
