Mrs. Dennis Murphy
The subject of this sketch was born in County Connaugh, Ireland, in 1832, and died at the home of her son, J.W. Murphy, southeast of Edgerton, Friday, Jan., 24, 1908. Deceased came to America when quite young and settled in Keokuk, Iowa, where she was married to Mr. Dennis Murphy in 1858. Their union was blessed with four sons and four daughters, all of which have passed to that great unknown world with the exception of Mr. J.W. Murphy of this community and Mrs. Mary O'Doud of Kansas City, Mo.
Four years ago Mrs. Murphy was bereft of her husband, since which event she has made her home with her son and daughter. Mrs. Murphy and her husband a few years after their marrriage, [sic] settled in Kansas City, where they lived for about two years, and then moved to the vicinty [sic] of Edgerton where they everafter continued to live; their residence here covering a period of about forty years. At the time of her death Mrs. Murphy was about 76 years old, and old age and general debility are attributed to be the cause of her demise. She was a life long member of the Catholic church, and devoted much of her life to the upbuilding [of?] the usefulness of the Church of the Assumption at this place.
The services were conducted at the Church of the Assumption Monday morning at 10 o'clock, by the pastor, Rev. Father Herron, who delivered a most impressive sermon. After the services at the church the remains were taken to the Catholic cemetery, east of town, and consigned to Mother Earth to await the Ressurection [sic] Morn. In the death of Mrs. Murphy the community has lost a good woman, the bereaved son and daughter a loving and affectionate mother and the church a most earnest and devout member.
