About the Cemetery
Highland Cemetery, sometimes known as Nall Cemetery, is tucked away in a quaint residential neighborhood in Prairie Village, KS, near the state and city line of Kansas City, Missouri. In the 1850s, this land was part of the Shawnee Nation reservation. As the Treaty with the Shawnee was modified and land opened up, pioneer brothers John and Thomas Nall and their families claimed 200 acres and became prosperous farmers.
This 1-acre cemetery was originally comprised of two seperate family cemeteries. The south 1/2 acre of the cemetery was on the Nall property and served as their cemetery while the north 1/2 acre was on the White property and served as their family cemetery. Many of the old marble stones on the White side are broken or lost.
In 1946 the first yearly meeting was held for the Highland Cemetery Association. The Nalls, Porters, and their other neighbors made up this association. Offices were elected and donations were given to fund the care of the cemetery in apparent exchange for lots. The association continued to have yearly meetings, and provide donations in this way, into the next generation of the Nalls and their neighboring families. In 1968, the first official plat was made in the newly developed city of Prairie Village. The first plots were sold to Asher Langworthy, and his namesake and other descendents of those first pioneers still hold offices in the Highland Cemetery Association today.
