About the Cemetery

Hiram Dougherty, Shawnee Indian, held the first patent to the land containing this cemetery. On 21 Sep 1865 Rice G. Maupin, of Howard Co, MO, transferred power of attorney to his brother, Levi Morriss Maupin, for care and administration of this land, and on 31 Oct 1866 Rice transferred ownership to his brother.

According to land, census, and atlas records, Levi, his wife Juda, and children lived on this land. Upon the death of Levi and Juda in 1880, the land was transferred to children, and when this parcel of land was sold by the children to D N and J H Lilly on 21 Oct 1880 the family cemetery was described as an exception to the sale. The surrounding land passed through a several owners and has been in the family of the current owners since the 1960s.
