About the Cemetery

This cemetery is one of the older cemeteries in Johnson County. It is located in rural McCamish Twp close to the Douglas County line and hails back a time when it was the last community in Johnson Co on the initial branch of the Oregon-California Trail. It is situated on a section line between two farmed sections, well in from the road, and is marked with a little outcropping of trees. At the time this cemetery was established it was next to an early school house that would have seen all of the traffic along the trail.

Little remains of this cemetery today. In 2005 I found, within the copse of trees, two stones covered with vines and bramble. On the west side of these trees is a clearing with the Broom stone. In 2007, a volunteer was able to uncover 6-7 stones that were buried.

In the early 1970s, this cemetery was transcribed as part of a project by the Johnson Co. Genealogical Society, and donated to the county. Since many of the stones I was unable to findi n 2005 were uncovered in 2007. Any entries from the original transcription still not found are added to this index.

Index

Photographed and transcribed by Linda K. Lewis, 29 Oct 2005. Re-photographed and updated 2008 after some buried markers were newly uncovered. This is a complete transcription by reading and photographing the gravestones. This transcription has been supplimented with a transcription by Elizabeth Hulse from the early 1970s that includes stones now missing.
